MY FAVOURITE INSPIRATIONAL QUOTES

My ‘101’ book duo is inspired by the most exquisite collections of quotations on the themes of joy, inspiration and journeying. Here are seven of my favourite, life changing quotations – ones I draw from every day. I hope they may inspire you too!

'Love Life and life will love you back'. Arthur Rubenstein

I find this a simple and wonderful mantra to live by every day. When we love life, life will find every reason to love us too. We will be supported and assisted beyond our wildest dreams as we create lives we love to live. When we focus on what isn’t working and what we lack in our lives, we are poor. We never seem to have enough. When we focus on loving our lives and all the riches we do possess however, our cups will always be full to overflowing. Actively choosing to love life is a choice we all have and is not only fulfilling and sustainable, it is also joyous and magnetic.

'Comparison is the thief of joy'.

These powerful and exciting words (popularly attributed to Theodore Roosevelt) encourage us to live for ourselves – not for or by others’ approval. When we compare ourselves to others, we inevitably detract from our own happiness. We are all unique beings. When we live lovingly and do our best, we may enjoy our own lives to the fullest.

'Life is not a mission to be accomplished but a reality to be experienced.' - Soren Kierkegaard

There are some days when things pile up and the rhythm of life feels more like a to-do list! Alas – when we pause for even a few seconds to remember that life is a journey and not a mission, the tensing, stressing and intensity melt away that little bit, just enough to allow us to breathe and see afresh. There will always be something to do next. Living in the present moment and journeying through life as if it were an adventure, however, circumvents both overwhelm and unrealistic expectations. It also encourages us to enjoy all parts of our journey, rest included.

'Your thoughts create your world.' Lao-Tzu

Realising how much power we posses to design our lives with our thoughts is like discovering the best kept secret imaginable!! Our thoughts create our worlds. Use positive affirmations to redirect your negative, self-sabotaging thoughts. When doubtful, or negative, reaffirm that you are in control, supported and at peace. This may sound overly simplistic, but I can safely say that nothing has been more life changing in my world than actively choosing positive thoughts. At first is takes effort, but with practice, it becomes unthinking and effortless. Real, sustainable happiness naturally follows, and the experience of living life is like unwrapping an endless gift.

Loving oneself is the beginning of a lifelong romance.' Oscar Wilde

I love Oscar Wilde’s words, his whimsical short stories included. In my eyes, self-love is the foundation for our inner peace and happiness. When we love and approve of ourselves, we can get in touch with own unique gifts and abilities, use them for our own good and the good of others, and offer our love freely without becoming disillusioned or depleted. When we love ourselves, we create boundaries easily to nurture and protect ourselves. We understand our worth, and we lead happy, healthy lives.

In this modern and fast paced life where the idea of ‘bigger, better, faster, newer’ pervades advertising and social media, we are encouraged to focus on what we lack. Focusing on what we do have and how loveable our natural qualities are makes us richer and more joyous people. Choosing self-love is no sugar coating, it is a real, achievable way of life for each one of us.

My upcoming book ‘The Art of Gratitude’ will feature an entire chapter on the subject of self-love. If this topic is of interest to you, I hope you might seek out and enjoy my new book!

'Be the change you wish to see in the world.' Gandhi

There are times we may feel powerless in the face of global despair. Human beings and our precious environment are suffering each day, despite nature’s resilience and our collective intelligence. It may be hard to accept our privilege in the face of inequity, or question why we are here and what indeed our purpose is. When each of us take it upon ourselves to be as loving as possible to ourselves, each other and our world, we are proactively contributing toward global change. By committing to changing ourselves for the better in healing and healthy ways, we are partaking in initiating a revolution. The way things are at present is not sustainable for ourselves or our planet. Choosing to start with ourselves is the most powerful thing we can do. We need not feel helpless, as Gandhi reminds us, we may begin today in any way we can. Kindness, creativity, innovation, compassion and community spirit are available to us all in every moment. We can all choose to use our energy in productive, spirited ways.

'I am a happy camper, so I guess I'm doing something right. Happiness is like a butterfly, the more you chase it, the more it will elude you, but if you turn your attention to other things, it will come and sit softly on your shoulder.' Thoreau

Do you ever find that trying to hard can result in unwanted side-effects!? Overcomplicating things, obsessing or setting unrealistically high standards inevitably results in frustration and disappointment. When we enjoy our lives and let happiness be a natural bi-product of that, it becomes ours. We needn’t chase it in isolation and feel short-changed when things do not go to plan. Happiness is a journey, not a destination. By enjoying the ride day by day, keeping busy doing the little things we love, butterflies of happiness will be sitting on our shoulders, or better still, dancing their beautiful colours through our days! Live and let be, happiness is naturally yours to enjoy.

I hope you might enjoy these words and ideas as much as I do. Do you have a favourite quotation you wish to share, or a comment you wish to make on any of those listed above? I look forward to hearing from you!
